So ‘Entertainment Weekly’ compiled a list of twenty movies “gays and gals” could enjoy. It is mostly (well, entirely) the stuff that inspired ‘The Celluloid Closet’ to be written in the first place. Here is my selection for a movie gay men and straight women can enjoy together. Is it because it features campy costumes and designs? No. Is it because it’s set in the world of David Bowie/Iggy Pop fanfiction? Possibly. Is it because Jonathan Rhys Meyers is Bowie, Ewan McGregor is Iggy, and Jonathan goes down on him mid-song and Christian Bale jerks off over the picture? Also “Iggy” sings “TV Eye” earlier in the movie, bareass nekkid and covered in oil and gold glitter? Also Eddie Izzard? Also Brian Molko? (I’d include Toni Colette, but she is not my favorite part of the movie.)
The idea that gay men and straight women can bond over movies of the former playing fashion consultant/therapist to the latter because that’s their only ambition in life is outdated and boring. The idea that we can bond over images of men being naked naked naked (and most importantly, naked with each other), I hope to think is a little more current.
Then, y’know, there’s the whole business where gay men and straight women can enjoy stuff like ‘A Fish Called Wanda’ or ‘There Will Be Blood’ or ‘The White Ribbon’ because not everybody has to like movies according to their demographic. But for now, have some naked time.
